The right prescription for crop protection

How does the old saying go, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”? While that might hold true for certain aspects of farm life, when it comes to crop protection products nothing could be farther from the truth.

The truth is, whether your operation spans 1,200 acres or 12,000, when it comes right down to it – no two fields, crop zones or soil conditions are ever the same. Some fields might need to have 40 acres treated, some might need 140, some might not need treatment at all. Traditionally, when spray time rolled around on the calendar, this fact meant either spray the whole field or don’t spray at all. Not anymore.

Goodbye blanket-spraying, hello targeted results

Recently, Climate FieldView™, a platform that allows farmers to harness the power of field data to maximize yield and boost ROI, introduced customers to the concept of manual scripting for crop protection products.

With this exciting innovation, FieldView has helped to remove the guesswork from where to spray crop protection products. Instead, farmers can use this new tool to end the practice of blanket-spraying fields where it doesn’t make sense, and move towards a more cost-effective, and sustainable way to protect their crops.

“All fields have variability, and not all fields need to be treated, or managed in the same way,“ explains Climate FieldView’s Marvin Talsma.

“With the new manual crop protection scripting tool, farmers now have the ability to create custom zones for each of their fields, to apply a crop protection product, such as a fungicide, herbicide, or an insecticide, only where it’s really needed.”

How and when to use this new tool

So, just where might a farmer use this new tool? Let’s say you’ve got a field of soybeans that needs a fungicide to combat white mould. After using FieldView to understand what parts of the field have a high potential for disease, you determine that due to the field variability, not all areas of that soybean field are at equal risk.

Thanks to manual scripting, you can now use FieldView to select the exact areas of your field that need treatment, select the right rate for the product, and start spraying only where your crop needs it. Pretty cool right?

What’s even cooler is the fact that by focusing on where you spray, you’re practising an environmentally sustainable way of applying product, and cutting your costs significantly, by reducing the number of acres sprayed.

Manual Scripting means you can:

The best part? All Climate FieldView customers need to do to try out the new manual scripting tool is log into their Climate FieldView account at https://climatefieldview.ca/ and give it a try.

While no two fields might ever be alike, what farmer wouldn’t want to save money, time and effort by spraying only what’s needed, at exactly the right rate? We haven’t met one yet.
