2020 wheat pool will be the last offered by Grain Farmers of Ontario

Grain Farmers of Ontario has announced it will no longer offer its wheat pool and forward contract marketing programs after the current crop year.

The Grain Farmers of Ontario Wheat Pool and Forward Contract programs were created by the Ontario Wheat Producers’ Marketing Board when there was a single desk marketing system and fewer ways to market wheat in Ontario. Over the last decade, the market for wheat has evolved and farmer-member engagement in these programs has declined, the producer organization says in a press release.

“The Grain Farmers of Ontario board of directors made this decision after several years of gathering feedback from our farmer-members and watching the trends in wheat marketing. It became increasingly clear that our farmer-members are successfully marketing their week on their own through other wheat buyers,” says Markus Haerle, chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario.

The 2020 crop Wheat Pool and contracts will continue to be marketed without any changes, GFO says. GFO will also continue to work with any farmer-member who has forward contracts.

The provincial commodity group says it will continue to provide daily price reports and bids and run the SellSmart app for market information, as well as actively promote Ontario wheat to domestic and international markets. It will also continue to work with the SGS Grains Analytical Lab.
