RealAg Radio, August 10: The year of the storms, winter wheat lessons, and super soil

(Kara Oosterhuis/RealAgriculture)

If you’re wondering how it is already the second week of August, don’t worry — you’re not alone! Harvest is beginning across the Prairies and is well underway in eastern Canada. Leaves are beginning to fall… in the distance, sleigh bells are beginning to ring…

In all seriousness, it’s one of our favourite days here at RealAgriculture — it’s Agronomic Monday! On today’s show, you’ll hear:

  • RealAgriculture resident agronomist Peter “Wheat Pete” Johnson, on the positive AND negatives of the recent rainfall that many parts of Ontario experienced, as well as lessons learned from the winter wheat crop this year out east;
  • Alana Serhan, market development specialist with PRIDE Seeds, with an update on the corn crop in western Canada;
  • Jeremy Boychyn, agronomy research extension specialist with Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions, on fusarium scouting post anthesis; and
  • Curtis Cavers with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, with an exciting conversation on all things soils — and yes, the conversation did come from the bottom of a six-foot soil pit!
