With 20 years of teaching and research achieved, Don Flaten says it’s time to retire.

It’s a retirement well earned, as the soil scientist with the University of Manitoba has taught over a thousand students the ins and outs of soil, its importance, and revealed to many the complexity of nutrient interactions. Flaten has also spent the last two decades working on crop productivity as it relates to soil nutrients, but with a whole-ecosystem approach — from the inclusion of livestock and manure to the stewardship of both phosphorus and nitrogen applications.

On this episode of Agronomy Geeks, Flaten joins host Lyndsey Smith to share his thoughts on the most mysterious of the soil nutrients (it’s not what you think), achievements in phosphorus understanding, and what happens when challenges brought forward in the classroom informs research, rather than the other way around.

P.S. Don did look up Lyndsey’s marks. She did quite well.
