Using economic threshold for precise spray application
A new sprayer prototype built through the collaboration of three companies, is looking to lower the cost of production and protect the environment by providing real time detection and spray application of weeds in row crops.
Developed through the joint efforts of Amazone, Bosch and xarvio, SmartSprayer uses software based on economic thresholds to make application decisions right down to individual plants.
“It’s a project we started in cooperation with experts in all fields. So, we have top technology from Bosch,…we have the knowledge from BASF xarvio digital farming company, and we, as the machine manufacturer, we have the knowledge about the sprayers,” says Gregor Bensmann, Amazone.
The booms are outfitted with sensors, pulse-width frequency modulation (PWFM) SpotFan 40-03 nozzles, spaced at 25 cm, and an active LED lighting system to allow it to function day or night.

Bensmann says there’s still a lot of work to do for the prototype phase in 2020, but by the middle of the year the company should know whether or not to continue with the project, in pursuit of commercialization.
According to Amazone, this more precise approach to weed control could result in savings between 20 and 60 per cent, while also protecting the environment.
