Food Bubble: Food waste — and actually doing something about it

(Debra Murphy/RealAgriculture)

If you try to tell Food Bubble host Andrew Campbell there’s nothing spoiling in your fridge, he won’t believe you.

“After all,” he says, “some reports have pointed out that of all the food we bring into our house, about 20 per cent of it goes out by way of the garbage. Think about that – 20 per cent of your food budget just thrown away.”

And that’s not the extent of it. Food waste happens all along the supply chain, and in Canada, we waste more than 11 million metric tonnes of food per year, worth nearly $50 billion.

In this episode of the show, Campbell speaks to Lori Nikkel of Second Harvest, a Canadian food recovery organization with the dual aim of providing hunger relief and protecting the environment. In it, the two discuss the size of the food waste problem in Canada, what Second Harvest has accomplished in re-directing food from landfills, the company’s new “eharmony of food,” and what we need to do to support food waste reduction.
