Short film highlights need for cattle in climate change fight

“We depend on nature, and we really have to live in symbiosis with it,” says Mickenzie Plemel-Stronk of Ducks Unlimited in the trailer for a new short film “Guardians of the Grasslands.”

The film is meant to be an education tool to showcase the benefits of agriculture and how not everything you read about farming and raising livestock is in fact true.

Amie Peck, public and stakeholder engagement specialist with the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) says she’s thrilled to see the film come to fruition.

“‘Guardians of the Grasslands’ is a short documentary, about 15 minutes, and it explores the role that cattle have in preserving and maintaining one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, which is actually right here in Canada,” Peck says, referring to the Northern Plains temperate grasslands.

“I think that’s a story we don’t hear very often, here in Canada, you know, we’re always looking at other spots in the world to see endangered ecosystems, so we want to make sure everybody knows that, and that they know that an essential part of keeping this ecosystem going is actually cattle.”

She says it’s the CCA’s hope, along with the other organizations involved, that this film will help pivot the conversation surrounding cattle as the cause to climate change to one where it shows cattle as a part of solution.
