Text Message: Your Cow Is About to Calve

Add letting you know that your cow is about to give birth to the list of things your cell phone can do.

A calving sensor that communicates via mobile network from Ireland-based MooCall recently debuted on the Canadian market.

“It’s a calving sensor that will text you a half hour to one hour before the cow calves,” says Eric Fazakas, MooCall’s distributor for Canada, in this video, filmed at Agribition in Regina last month.

The device is attached to the tail, not inserted like similar products. It senses the contractions of the cow and the motion of the tail, sending a text message when things are getting close.

Fazakas says thousands of the units have been sold in Europe, and he’s seeing interest from both dairy and beef producers in Canada.

“I’ve had it testing last calving season in Saskatchewan, and we had some very good results, so we decided to bring the product to Canada,” he notes.

$425 will buy one unit and one year of service through the Rogers cell phone network.
