Fair Rail for Grain Farmers Amendment Hits Snag; Bill C-30 Sent Back to Committee

CN Rail trainThe federal government’s proposed Bill-30, dubbed the “Fair Rail for Grain Farmers” act, hit a snag while moving through the legislative process yesterday, as the bill was sent back to committee over an amendment being deemed “out of order.”

At issue was the amendment proposing railways compensating shippers over poor service — what some have called the “teeth” of the bill.

Liberal MP Ralph Goodale said the federal government rushed the bill and put the amendment in as a “political after thought.” It’s poor design and wording prompted the bill to be sent back to committee for a re-working.
