The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) confirmed today that porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) was found on a farm in the southwest of the province.

First detected in the United States in May of 2013, PEDv is a devastating disease in hog populations.  The disease has been confirmed in over 14 states and is still spreading.

The disease poses no risk to human safety. The province has released this statement (click here) and is working on communicating with hog farmers regarding containing the disease.
