A Very Different Kind of STARS Ambulance Rescue

(supplied)

For rural and farming communities, an accident of any kind can be made worse simply because of distance. The extra time it takes for help to arrive or to transport to a fully equipped hospital can, quite literally, be the difference between life and death. The STARS Ambulance, a helicopter-based rescue team, is a key part of rural health care in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but the service is only getting started in Manitoba. As part of the initiative to expand its service, STARS is hosting a one-of-a-kind fundraising rescue — company leaders will be flown to a remote island where they’ll have to stay until they’ve raised enough money to get rescued in the CEO STARS Ambulance Rescue event taking place September 12, 2013.

Chris McCallister, head of Red Beard Farms at Portage la Prairie, Man., and Brenda Tjaden Lepp, co-founder of FarmLink Marketing Solutions, are both braving the wilds of northern Manitoba to raise both money and awareness for the STARS Ambulance service. In the interview above, hear why Tjaden Lepp and McCallister believe so strongly in the value of the service for rural areas, and about their big fundraising goals.
