If you were given the choice between playing the game or sitting down together to come up with the rules of the game which would you pick? Here we see the inherent problem with the family business and the dilemma of succession planning. Unfortunately, we can play the game for years before we run into a problem with the rules or lack thereof. Yes it’s more fun to do production, but weigh that temporary fun against a major family squabble and you’ll wish fairly quickly that you sat down to formulate a plan.

The truth is, one awkward Christmas dinner beats a lifetime of none at all. That’s where our good friend Jolene Brown comes in. We’ve talked to her before about the need for farmers to talk about succession planning and apparently, the message still needs to be heard. I spoke to her about it at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina.
