Take the Time to Thank a Farmer

This week is Thanksgiving in the United States which brings family together to share thanks for many of the things in our lives.  This year many of my friends on twitter engaged in “thank a farmer” to make sure that people in agriculture feel recognized and appreciated for the things they do.  Whether it is calving in the snow or combining late into the night, farming is not easy.  We should not take the food we eat or the hard work it takes to produce it for granted.  Farming is a career that starts early in life, full of traditions, very rewarding and requires a very intensive work ethic.  I encourage you to take the time this weekend to thank a farmer that you know and make them aware of why you appreciate the things they do.  If you are a farmer take the time to reflect and be thankful for the family and great business you are engaged in.  I had one farmer friend tell me yesterday that he was going to use #thankafarmer to educate his kids on why agriculture is so important to the community and world.

The other goal of the initiative was to bring exposure to agriculture in the mainstream.  We had many people in urban areas tweeting about why they were thankful to farmers.  I’m not sure who had the #thankafarmer idea but it was a great one.  This is just an example of farmers and the industry sharing the story of agriculture in the mainstream.  Agriculture cannot just sit on it’s hands and expect its story to be told.  Telling the story means you must speak up and make sure people understand the message.  Thank a farmer on Wednesday and Thursday was just one example of telling the story to the world and having some fun in the process.

Here is a great blogroll supplied by @JPlovesCotton of  #thankafarmer blog posts form this week.
